Historic ToursFirst, if you haven't seen Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, you should definitely make it a high priority to do so. It is the real deal, preserved exactly the way it was when Jefferson designed and built it (multiple times, in fact.) About 60% of the articles in the house were originally owned and used by Jefferson. There's a good reason it is on the United Nations' World Heritage List of international treasures. And it is the only house in the United States on that list.
(Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with nor do I receive any revenue from Monticello. I encourage you to see it whether or not you engage my services. )
The more I learn about Thomas Jefferson, the more amazed I am by him. The house and grounds tours are great, but nobody can cover everything about the place and person. Would you like to learn more? Take me along! By the way, they do not give grounds tours during the winter; I can fill in for you.
While up on the mountain there's also Ashlawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe, fifth president of the United States and close friend and neighbor of Thomas Jefferson. Don't forget lunch and a tour at Michie Tavern, an authentic, 18th century tavern from the time of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe. The mid-day meal is traditional southern style, cooked from historic recipes. The plates and cups are metal and the wait staff wears period attire.
There is also Montpelier, the home of James Madison, fourth president of the United States and also close friend of Thomas Jefferson. This historic home is 45 minutes away in Orange, VA.
The staff at Ashlawn, Michie Tavern and Montpelier all give excellent tours. I can help you plan your visit to maximize your enjoyment of these historic treasures. Plus, I can help with the question of where to eat. Other than Michie Tavern there is only one other good option on the mountain, and it's not obvious. But it is unique and delicious.
